The NuMI Neutrino Beam and Potential for an Off-Axis Experiment
نویسنده
چکیده
The Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) facility at Fermilab is under construction and due to begin operations in late 2004. NuMI will deliver an intense νμ beam of variable energy 2-20 GeV directed into the Earth at 58 mrad. Several aspects of the design are reviewed, and potential limitations to the ultimate neutrino flux are described. In addition, potential measurements of neutrino mixing properties are described.

Letter of Intent FLARE Fermilab Liquid ARgon Experiments
Neutrinos have been a source of excitement lately. While the neutrino mixing has been expected, its pattern has taken us by surprise. The first evidence of physics beyond the standard model is here and more excitement is likely on the way.. Fermilab has a unique opportunity to take a lead in the neutrino physics in the next decade or so. Our recent major investments put us in an envi-able posit...
متن کاملResults from MINOS and NOνA
The MINOS experiment, operating in the NuMI beam since 2005, has provided the most precise measurement of the atmospheric mass splitting |∆m232|, and the recent combination of the νμ, νe, and atmospheric neutrino samples has provided some evidence of non-maximal mixing, and hints about the neutrino mass hierarchy and the θ23 octant. Construction of the NOνA experiment, situated off-axis in the ...

Long-baseline neutrino oscillation physics in the U.S. is centered at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (FNAL), in particular at the Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) beamline commissioned in 2004-2005. Already, the MINOS experiment has published its first results confirming the disappearance of νμ’s across a 735 km baseline. The forthcoming NOνA experiment will search for the trans...
متن کاملNeutrino Oscillations with a Proton Driver Upgrade and an Off-Axis Detector: A Case Study
We study the physics capabilities of the NuMI beamline with an off-axis highlysegmented iron scintillator detector and with the inclusion of the currently under study proton driver upgrade. We focus on the prospects for the experimental determination of the remaining neutrino oscillation parameters, assuming different outcomes for experiments under way or in preparation. An optimization of the ...
متن کاملSe p 20 02 A non - QE signature of ν e appearance in a water Cherenkov detector
We argue that analyzing the ν e-induced CC reaction ν e n → e − π 0 p along with the quasielastic reaction ν e n → e − p may significantly enhance the sensitivity of a water Cherenkov detector to the subleading oscillation ν µ → ν e at neutrino energies ∼ 2–3 GeV, as projected for the off-axis neutrino beam of NuMI. At the level of standard selections, the multi-ring signal of ν µ → ν e yielded...
